What is a blog?

A blog is short for "web log." In short, a blog is a collection of essays published periodically on a website. Really, a blog can be about anything: web design, being a law student, your day at work, fluffy the cat... This blog, the Fizbang Blog, happens to be about the business of social network applications and websites.

So what is the big deal about blogs? Well, people are starting to realize that they, or anyone, can publish their own content where millions of people can read it.

This self-publishing phenomenon has a few major effects:

1. The smallest nitch interests can be served because published content no longer must be homogenized to be effective.
2. Any important issue or event can be captured, discussed, and analyzed by millions of people. News is no longer constrained by the confines of a television screen.

So what do blogs mean for business? Well, a blog gives you, the business, an opportunity to really capture and engage your target market. By writing regularly about what you sell, you will garner a loyal audience that trusts your opinions and expertise.

And guess where they'll go when they're interested to buy...

Imagine an over-the-counter-top conversation with a million people. That is what a blog is to business.
