The 30 second "Search Engine Optimization" check
Search engine traffic is vital to any web-based marketing. But are you concerned that your business's web site is not optimized for the best search rankings?
Try this quick exercise. Turn off your monitor (to prevent cheating). Find a scrap of paper and a pen and write down your business in seven words or less. Got it? Good. Cross out all the small, common words like "the" and "we." Turn your monitor back on and go to your business's home page. Use the find function (usually Ctrl+f) to search for each word not crossed out on your list on the home page. If each word does not appear at least once, then your web site is not optimized.
There you go. I just saved you tons of money in lost sales and consulting fees. (send your checks in the mail
)
Why This Works
Search engines can only read text. Unlike people, they do not recognize words saved in pictures or Flash and make no assumptions about the topic of your web site. Reducing your business to only few words helps identify important key words that define your business. Using find in your browser works like how search engines read your web site. Words not found with search means that search engines will not know those words are important and your search rank will be poor.
Granted, search engine optimization is more complex than passing a "30 second check." Passing this test does necessarily mean your web site is optimized, but a resounding failure certainly indicates that you should consider search engine optimization if you want your web site to be effective.
